Learn the proper steps for changing the oil on your Evinrude outboard engine. Regular oil changes are crucial for maintaining performance and extending engine life.
1. Gather Necessary Tools and Supplies
- Evinrude-specific oil and oil filter
- Oil drain pan
- Socket wrench and appropriate socket size
- Funnel and clean rags
- Gloves for protection
2. Warm Up the Engine
- Start the engine and let it run for about 5 minutes to warm up the oil.
- Warm oil drains more efficiently and carries away impurities.
- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool for a few minutes before proceeding.
3. Drain the Old Oil
- Locate the oil drain plug and place the oil drain pan underneath.
- Remove the drain plug using a socket wrench and allow the oil to fully drain.
- Once drained, clean the drain plug and reinstall it securely.
4. Replace the Oil Filter
- Remove the old oil filter using an oil filter wrench.
- Apply a small amount of fresh oil to the new filter's gasket.
- Install the new filter by hand, ensuring it is snug but not over-tightened.
5. Add Fresh Oil
- Open the oil filler cap and use a funnel to pour in the recommended amount of new oil.
- Check the dipstick to ensure the oil level is correct.
- Replace the filler cap and wipe away any spills.
6. Final Checks and Cleanup
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes, checking for any leaks.
- Turn off the engine and recheck the oil level, topping off if necessary.
- Dispose of the used oil and filter responsibly at a recycling center.
